Common MS Word Issues and How to Fix Them

Q: Why are there random breaks in words at the ends of lines?

This issue has to do with Asian language settings in Microsoft Word. The steps in this article should help you correct the formatting issue.

In short: Add an Asian language as a proofing language in Word -- I used Japanese, but I don't think it matters -- select all the text, and then click on the little arrow at the corner of the paragraph box, click the "Asian Typography" tab, and then uncheck "Allow Latin text to wrap in the middle of a word". Boom. Magic.

Q. How can I fix text that's going right to left in comment bubbles?

It's exasperating problem, but here's how to fix it. First go to the "review" tab and find the "language" icon in the Language tab. Click on the little arrow to open up the options and you should be able to "set proofing language" to English.

When changing the proofing language doesn't work, there are two different options:

  1. If the text is only running right to left instead of left to right, try this resource: What to do if my comment boxes are running right to left
  2. However, if it's running left to right and the spelling is backwards too, use option #2 here (which is tedious but works): How to change text direction in a comment balloon in Word

Q. Why does my name keep changing to "Author" in my comment bubbles?

This has to do with a privacy option called "Remove personal information from file properties on save". The author likely had this setting turned on when they saved the file.

To turn it off on Windows, go to Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Privacy Options > Uncheck "Remove personal information from file properties on save."

On Mac, go to the “Review” ribbon > Protect > Protect Document > Uncheck “Remove personal information from this file on save” at the bottom of the pop up.
