Setting Your Alert Preferences for New Documents

You have some cool options when it comes to how and when you receive alerts about new docs in the queue. You may want to be notified of new documents as they hit the queue without being chained to your laptop 24/7 or you might want to turn notifications off while you sleep.

You can receive alerts for new documents three ways: an alert noise from your Kibin dashboard, a text message, and/or an email. Note that to receive alert notifications to your email address and/or cell phone, you must first set up your contact information on your settings page.

To manage your alert preferences, click on the alert icon in the top left corner of your editor dashboard:

(Notice that here you can easily toggle alerts on and off; turning off this switch will keep you from getting alerts of any kind.)

This will take you to your Alerts page, which looks like this:

The first drop down menu allows you to pick an alert sound to play from your browser window when a new doc hits the queue:

Simply choose a sound you like, and hit the "Save" button at the bottom of the page. Note that your Kibin dashboard must be open in a browser tab or window for this alert to fire.

The next options on your Alerts page allow you to select how and when you receive alerts about new docs and direct requests. Simply select whether you want to receive new document alerts via text message and/or email. You may select either one or both (or neither!).

An email alert looks like this:

A text message alert looks like this:

Note: When you receive alerts, the only way to nab the paper is to hop into the editing queue and download it before another editor does. An alert is different from a direct request in that there is no guarantee that the paper will still be there, even if you rush to the queue. But it’s always worth a shot!

You may also select whether you want to receive alerts immediately or after some time has passed. As an example, you may want to delay notifications until papers have been available for 5 minutes. This would prevent you from receiving an alert, logging in, and finding that the paper has already been picked up by another editor. Conversely, you may want to receive instant notifications. If so, simply set your availability to "immediately."

You can also set how frequently your notifications arrive each time a new document hits the queue. For example, if you set an alert for new documents every 5 minutes, and 10 new documents are uploaded within a minute, you will receive all 10 new document notifications every 5 minutes, rather than immediately within that minute. If you prefer to get all the notifications right when documents are uploaded, choose "immediately."

Pro tip: If you elect to receive alerts immediately, email alerts sometimes come through to a smart phone faster than text alerts depending on your network, especially if your phone is connected to Wi-Fi. You might try turning on both for a while to see which notification comes through quicker to increase your chances of being first to the queue.

You can also change your alert preferences while you sleep. Simply scroll to the "Sleep Mode" section and update the hours you don't want to receive doc notifications. Make sure you check the "Activate" box to turn it on and click the orange "Save" button.

Note that direct request alerts are NOT affected by sleep mode settings (meaning you will always get DR notifications during sleep mode if they are activated).

You can also turn off your ability to direct requests completely by scrolling down to "Vacation Mode" and toggling that setting to "on."

Now you can know what's happening in the queue whenever and however you like!
