Using Slack--All the Cool Editors Do It!
Slack is a cool messaging app where you can communicate with Kibin admins and other editors. Kibin believes in creating community, and Slack is a great tool for combatting the loneliness of remote work. Just because we work remotely doesn’t mean we work alone! We’re in this together!
First, please reach out to Nikki if you haven't yet received an invitation to join Kibin’s Slack workspace. Once you’ve created an account, you can use Slack in your web browser, download the awesome desktop app, and/or check out the mobile app. For more information on installing and using Slack, visit their help center.
#virtualwatercooler
The Virtual Water Cooler is the multipurpose communication hub for Kibin admins and editors, where everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate. Every day, the CHC on duty posts a quick hello when their shift starts so you know who is available for how long. When CHCs are off-duty, the Community Manager monitors the Water Cooler for questions. (You can also email support questions to team@kibin.com or direct message administrators in a private chat.)
Use the Water Cooler to notify editors when you need to drop a document back into the queue or have any other peer-to-peer information to convey. This channel can also provide quick support. If you experience a Microsoft Word issue Google can’t solve or you’re stuck trying to decode an author’s word salad, ask your fellow editors and Kibin admins for help. Someone should come to your rescue!
We also encourage chitchat in the Water Cooler. (Yes, even if Kibin work is slow! 😉) Feel free to share an interesting article, a personal story, or hilarious memes and tweets. We’d love to banter about anything you think a group of nerdy editors might enjoy -- just make sure it’s SFW.
@channel Alerts
When unclaimed documents are close to expiring in the queue, admins will shout them out by tagging @channel in a Water Cooler message. This sends everyone a notification whether they are online or not (based on your other Slack settings). Admins also use @channel messages to convey urgent information like known site issues.
To make sure you receive these alerts when you’re away from your desktop, configure your Slack notification settings to email you about mentions and @channel messages. (You can also get push notifications on your mobile device if you download the app.)
On Slack's platform, click your photo icon and navigate to Preferences. Under Notifications, scroll down to the Channel-specific Notification section and click on #virtualwatercooler. You should see a screen like this:
Make sure to check "Also include @channel and @here" if you select mentions-only.
Next, scroll up to "When I'm not active on desktop..." and configure your settings. You can opt to send mobile app notifications after a certain period of time or receive an email when you have missed notifications and DMs:
After you click save, you'll be notified about opportunities to earn when you're away from your computer!
